Courses- September 2007
Movement 12.
3 day CHOREOVIDEO LABORATORY with LISA NELSON (USA).
Exploring the dialogue between moving and seeing.
November 3rd, 4th and 5th 2007. Brighton. (£80).
This workshop is suitable for screen dance artists, and dance artists with a particular interest in Lisa's work. If you would like to attend, please send an email detailing your work and your interest in the workshop, to movementtwelve@yahoo.co.uk. Deadline October 1st. PLACES ARE STRICTLY LIMITED.
With hands-on work with the mobile camera, we will focus on the process of in-camera editing, generating spontaneous and complete compositions. The workshop is preparation for any application of video to dance to video: Performance, documentation, choreography. By alternating roles of cameraperson, mover and live viewer, participants will gain insight into the process of selective viewing
and become familiar with the unique quality and translation of movement time and space to video image. Emphasis will be placed on developing a spontaneous response and flexible attitude toward seeing movement, and evolving camera and editing techniques that complement, augment, and/or reflect the way we move through our world.
LISA NELSON has been exploring the role of the senses in the performance of movement since the 70s. Best known for her work as an improvisational performer and choreographer, and developer of Tuning Scores, she has been extending her inquiry into the video medium for many years, creating and teaching a two-year course of study in video and dance at Bennington College. She teaches and performs across the U.S. and abroad and continues a longstanding collaboration with dancer Steve Paxton. She is director of Videoda, an archival, production, and distribution project for videotapes of improvised dance performance
worldwide, and since 1977, has co-edited Contact Quarterly, an international dance and improvisation journal. She lives in Vermont.

Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia offers a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Dance) degree that has a well-established dance video component within a collaborative environment. In 2007, they have added to this a 24-camera motion capture studio in which dance students, artists and researchers can work with animators and interactive media specialists to make screen dance using 3D animation packages such as Maya and 3D Studio Max.
This is a first for Australia, and rare, world-wide, to have a commercial motion capture lab run out of a dance department.
